Hiking to Gorman Lake in Golden BC

A hidden alpine gem, a borrowed canoe, and big plans to come back for more.

Gorman Lake, Golden BC

Views looking down at Gorman Lake, Golden BC

If you’re looking for a lesser-known alpine lake with stunning views, icy blue water, and ridge-top panoramas—Gorman Lake just might be your new favourite spot. It’s tucked into the mountains above Golden, BC, and though it’s a bit of a mission to get there, the payoff is 100% worth it.

Matt and I first hiked to Gorman Lake in fall 2020, when the larches were turning and the trails were quiet. We’d been hearing about this place for a while—remote, wild, and incredibly beautiful. It did not disappoint.

We did the out-and-back hike to the lake, then scrambled up the ridge behind it for a jaw-dropping view looking down at the teal water and surrounding peaks. We attempted to carry on to Holt Lakes after hearing it could be linked up, but without a GPS track or much daylight, we had to turn back. It’s definitely not a marked or easy extension—but it’s on my adventure list for the future!

Gorman Lake, Golden BC

Gorman Lake Trail Overview

  • Distance: ~8 km return

  • Elevation Gain: ~385 m

  • Trail Type: Out-and-back

  • Time: 2.5–4 hours

  • Difficulty: Moderate

  • Family Friendly: Yes (with older kids or a hiking carrier)

  • Dog Friendly: Yes

This is one of those hikes that feels off-the-beaten-path—in the best way. It starts with a steep initial climb through forest before transitioning to open alpine terrain. The lake itself is a stunning turquoise blue, often cold enough to take your breath away (literally), but oh-so-refreshing on a hot summer day.

How to Get There

From Golden:

Drive west on Highway 1 for about 2 km, then turn right (north) on Golf Course Drive, which becomes Alpine Road and then Dogtooth Forest Service Road (FSR). Follow signs for Gorman Lake Recreation Trail. The drive takes about 30–40 minutes from town depending on road conditions. A high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended—this is a logging road with some steep and rough sections.

From Revelstoke: ~1.5 hrs

From Calgary: ~3.5 hrs via Trans-Canada Hwy (with beautiful mountain views the whole way!)

Gorman Lake Trailhead Tips

  • The parking area is marked with signage, but there’s no cell reception once you’re up the FSR.

  • Watch for logging trucks and pull over where needed—these roads are actively used.

  • There are no facilities at the trailhead, so plan accordingly.

About the Trail

After the steep start, the trail mellows out as you enter the open subalpine zone. The views open up quickly, and you’ll pass through meadows and over small streams before reaching the lake nestled at the base of rocky ridges. In the fall, golden larches light up the landscape—absolutely magical.

Once at the lake, take time to explore. There’s a well-loved canoe stashed at the shoreline (bring a paddle if you plan to use it), and if you have energy to spare, head up the ridge behind the lake for an unforgettable aerial view.

We tried to find the route over to Holt Lakes, but without a trail and no GPS track, it was a challenge. If you plan to go beyond Gorman, do your research and come prepared—it’s rugged and remote.

Camping at Gorman Lake

There are a few backcountry-style camping spots near the lake—no official campground, but some flat areas for tents near the shoreline. If you do camp, Leave No Trace principles are extra important here. Pack out all garbage, don’t camp too close to the water, and be bear aware (bring a canister or hang your food).

There are no toilets or amenities, so come fully self-sufficient.

Future Plans: Gondola to Gorman

This one’s still on my list, but it’s worth mentioning—you can hike from the top of the Kicking Horse gondola to Gorman Lake if you’re up for a long point-to-point route. You’d need a shuttle at one end and good navigation skills, but it’s a wild and scenic alpine adventure I’d love to tackle one day.

Other Things to Do in Golden

We’ve spent quite a bit of time in Golden, and it’s become one of our favourite basecamps for Kootenay adventures. Here are a few must-dos when you’re in town:

☕ Coffee at Ethos Café

Our go-to every time we’re in town. Ethos has incredible coffee, tasty baked goods, and the best chill vibe for post-hike recovery or early morning fuel-ups. Their patio is cozy, and they’ve got great grab-and-go options too.

🌉 Golden Skybridge

This relatively new attraction is an epic stop for families—suspension bridges, zip lines, and amazing canyon views.

🚶 Golden River Walk

A lovely way to wind down after a big hike. The walk loops through downtown Golden along the river, with lots of spots to sit, snack, and enjoy the view.

Where to Stay in Golden

Whether you’re tenting or treating yourself, Golden has options for every kind of adventurer.

Camping:

  • Cedar Lake Rec Site (free & rustic, close to town)

  • Golden Municipal Campground (walking distance to downtown)

Lodges + Cabins:

Gorman Lake is one of those places that sticks with you—the quietness, the raw beauty, the sense of finding something a little off the map. Whether you’re just doing the day hike or planning to explore further, it’s one of our favourite spots in the Golden area.

We’ll definitely be back—maybe with our kids, maybe with overnight gear, maybe to take on the traverse from Kicking Horse. But one thing’s for sure: Gorman Lake isn’t a one-and-done kind of adventure.
